Funding opportunities for sports clubs and municipalities

The conversion from conventional metal halide lamps (HQI) to state-of-the-art LED floodlights involves some costs. Although AAA-Lux systems pay for themselves within a few years thanks to massive electricity savings, clubs and municipalities still need to come up with a significant amount of money up front.

Thanks to the significantly reduced CO2 emissions, several institutions have decided to support the clubs by subsidizing part of the conversion costs.


Here, we provide information about your funding options.


BUMB Funding Under the Municipal Guidelines:

Application period suspended until February 1, 2025; thereafter:

The federal funding amount is set at 25%. The following requirements must be met to receive funding:

  1. A greenhouse gas reduction of at least 50% must be demonstrated for the system components to be installed
  2. Newly installed lights must feature a replaceable module and ballast
  3. Newly installed luminaires must not emit light into the upper half-space; ground-mounted spotlights are excluded
  4. The new lighting systems must have a reasonable economic payback period
  5. A minimum grant of €10,000 must be achieved, i.e., the total contract value must be at least €40,000.

The following applies to sports infrastructure:

  1. Newly installed luminaires must have a minimum service life (L80) of 50,000 operating hours, according to the manufacturer’s specifications.
  2. When selecting the color temperature and lighting class, insect and wildlife conservation concerns must be taken into account. The correlated color temperature must not exceed 4,000 Kelvin.
  3. A design based on DIN EN 12193 must be carried out by a qualified specialist planner.
  4. The illuminance may not exceed the value specified in DIN EN 12193 for the respective sport—Lighting Class III (for regular training) or Lighting Class II (for competition)—by more than 30%.
  5. The ULOR value of the luminaires must be 0%.
  6. Upon completion of the project, before-and-after photographic documentation of the lighting system must be submitted.

Funding from Sports Associations:

Many sports associations also support their clubs and provide funding for up to 30% of the eligible amount. It is therefore worth checking with your own sports association to see if you can submit an application.


Multiple funding options can be combined. However, please note that in most cases, up to 15% of the total cost must be covered by the applicant. This means that if the club or municipality receives other funding, the total amount of all grants combined may not exceed 85% in this case.
